Sabor Antiguo
About This Spot
Stepping into Sabor Antiguo, you find yourself embraced by the gentle hum of a warm, unhurried morning in Oaxaca’s Centro. The restaurant unfolds like a quiet neighborhood gem, where the air carries a whisper of time-honored traditions and the gentle rhythm of a kitchen working with care. This is a place where moments stretch comfortably, inviting you to settle in and savor not just a meal, but an experience shaped by history and heart.
The atmosphere here is relaxed yet purposeful—an ode to the slow, deliberate craft behind each dish. The aroma of freshly made tortillas mingles with the earthy notes of mezcal and the comforting scent of chocolate, offering a sensory glimpse into the deeply rooted culinary heritage of the region. Whether you arrive for a comforting breakfast or a midday feast, the pace encourages lingering, conversation, and a quiet appreciation for every ingredient and flavor.
Sabor Antiguo feels like a rendezvous with Oaxaca’s soul, where recipes handed down through generations come alive with fresh, local produce and an unmistakable devotion to authenticity. Here, dishes are more than food—they are stories told through hand-ground chiles, home-milled corn, and time-honored methods preserved by the attentive care of the owner and the kitchen family. The tactile pleasure of biting into something like a quesadilla bursting with locally sourced meat or savoring the smoky depth of a mole feels intimate and grounding.
Beyond the plate, the restaurant reveals a deeper connection to community and culture: cooking classes led by Jacqueline transform visitors into participants, sharing laughter and learning alongside locals. This personal touch echoes throughout the space, where everyone—from first-time visitors to returning guests—feels part of an ongoing conversation about tradition and taste.
For the traveler keen to look beyond the usual tourist trail, Sabor Antiguo offers a window into Oaxaca’s culinary rhythms—unrushed, honest, and quietly rich with the flavors of a distinctive place and its people.

My place to visit during my stays at the local hostel. Visited area in 2018 and came back again twice on my recent visit. Food is all hand made traditional way, but service is a bit slow depending on the time since there are 2 dinning areas. Cost is right compared to Nov 20 market for under 150 to 200 pesos depending on mea.Overall a place to try if around.

Our family of five took the cooking class with Jaquelina and we all really enjoyed it. Easily one of the highlights of our trip. Great food and great times.

We took the cooking class with Tia Jaquie. It was incredible. She was such a great teacher and we had so much fun learning to cook traditional Oaxacan food.

Amazing “mole negro”! Really traditional place, away from the tourist traps in the centre. Must try!

We've had several events at this restaurant, and the food is consistently cooked with fresh, local produce. Their meat, poultry, pork, and cheese all come from local farmers' markets. What truly makes this place special is their adherence to ancient, traditional recipes. They cook nearly everything from scratch, closely supervised by the owner and founder, Mrs. Jacqueline. Your taste buds will certainly bear witness to this! It's not a fancy spot, but it's a great place to taste original Oaxacan food.

Always get great service, very polite and friendly staff. The lunch specials are budget friendly and Fridays are seafood day. The Crab soup was delicious

At first I was a bit frustrated about the wait time BUT when I got my food I realized it was worth the wait. A whole new take on chilaquiles. Amazing!!

Great food and service. I came back a second time very near closing time to get some caldo de pollo for a sick friend and they were very gracious. Highly recommend
